High School Seniors Explore Science Through Virtual Reality at Studio X
Wilson Magnet High School at Studio X

Last week, Studio X hosted an enthusiastic group of seniors from Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School as part of their International Baccalaureate program. Joined by their biology and physics teachers, the students explored extended reality (XR) to link immersive virtual experiences with science and physiology.

The visit went beyond testing out emerging tech—it paired VR with hands-on biology experiments designed by their teachers. After a short XR overview, the students measured their resting heart rate and blood pressure to set a baseline for later comparison.

Equipped with VR headsets, they dove into four VR applications:

  • Among Us VR: A tense, collaborative game that honed teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Richie’s Plank Experience: A daring virtual plank walk that tested perceptions and stress responses.
  • Epic Roller Coasters: A thrilling ride sparking excitement and physical reactions like racing hearts.
  • Beat Saber: A rhythmic challenge slashing beats with lightsabers, blending fun with physical exertion.

Afterward, the students remeasured their heart rate and blood pressure, noting significant shifts. This fueled discussions on how virtual environments trigger real physiological responses, enriching their understanding of anatomy, physiology, and sensory connections.

As the librarian guiding this session, I was thrilled by the students’ engagement. Their teachers appreciated its curriculum relevance, reinforcing Studio X’s commitment to advancing education through immersive tech.

Inspired by this success, we’re eager to collaborate with more educators and community members. Are you a local educator or organization interested in XR’s educational potential? Reach out—we’d love to partner!
